Chapter 877 Penance Beathan had been taken away for quite stime, but his words lingered in the air. They echoed endlessly in the small room, refusing to fade away.
Emelie's expression was hard to read, like a moon veiled by thick clouds, obscuring any trace of light.
Jodie couldn't bear the silence any longer and tentatively called out, "Ma'am?" Emelie closed her eyes, her chest tightening. It was hard to tell if she felt pain or numbness.
She asked in a low voice, "Do you think what Beathan said is true? That my mother didn't die three years ago and is still alive?" Jodie was just as shaken. In fact, her world had already been turned upside down stago.
The William she thought that she knew and the William she had witnessed these past few days were completely different.
One was cold, heartless, and indifferent.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtThe other would go to the ends of the earth for Emelie. He would jump off a cliff without hesitation, or venture into dangerous territory in Faldoria without a second thought.
It was as clear as day that he would do anything for Emelie. So, even Jodie couldn't bring herself to say anything harsh.
"I don't know, ma'am," she said.
Emelie smiled a self-mocking smile. "I think that it's true. William can do anything." She had underestimated him. If there was anyone who could pull off the impossible, it was William.
The fact that he always showed up wherever she was, which meant that he knew every detail of her life, was enough to prove that he had the power to turn the world upside down.
So, her mother was really alive. She hadn't died.
Emelie took a deep breath. Her throat was dry and painful as if it had been scraped with sandpaper.
She said, "Why didn't he tell me? I've asked him so many times, in so many different situations, and he would rather letbelieve that he was the murderer than tellthe truth..." He wanted her to hate him. He knew that if she believed he was responsible for her mother's death, she would never be able to forgive him.
It wouldn't matter how much blood he shed or how many dangers he faced for her, there would always be an unbridgeable chasm between them.
Suddenly, it dawned on her.
She laughed bitterly. "Oh, I get it now. What he wanted was fornot to forgive him. He wantedto take revenge on him." He wanted her to hurt, torment, and break him. He wanted her to make him feel the pain and the misery she had endured.
That was what William wanted all along. He believed that he owed her, that he deserved to bear the brunt of her anger.
How noble of him. How full of self-awareness and penance.
Emelie smiled disdainfully. "The other day, I told Wesley that I've spent my whole life reacting. And now, look at me, even my revenge is something I've been forced into." "Ma'am, do you want to return hnow?" Jodie asked hesitantly, sensing that this was what Emelie needed right now. "I'll arrange a private flight back right now." However, Emelie shook her head. "No, I'm not going back." Her band brushed under her eyes, though it was hard to tell what she was wiping away. The room was dim and the light was too faint to see clearly.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmHer voice was raspy as she said, "I promised Wesley that I'd be in Mercianna the day before the wedding. Jodie, we'll stick to the plan. We're going to Mercianna." Emelie was still going to Faldoria? Even though Jodie worked for Wesley, she couldn't help but feel that Emelie should go back and clear things up with William now.
"Ma'am..." 'Jodie started.
Emelie's tone was flat. "That day, I asked him if there was any misunderstanding, if he had anything he wanted to explain. He chose to stay silent.
"So, no matter what reasons he has in the future, I won't listen. I won't forgive him. He made the decision to keep it from me." She had given him so many chances.
Jodie offered cautiously, "Maybe... It's because he's dying. He didn't want you to feel guilty for him."
"That makes sense. He helpstake revenge on the three families and endures my wrath. In the end he'll die by my hands. I will successfully take revenge, and he will die in prison, putting a tragic end to our story. That's how he envisioned it, right?" Emelie sneered. "What guilt could I possibly have toward him? He's the one who wronged me!" she said.
Her breathing quickened. "That tumor in his lung was small. He could have had it removed and been fine. But he chose not to. He chose to let it grow.
"He wants to die? Fine. He's made all these plans for himself, but but did he ever think about how anyone else feels? He's always acting like the hero of his own story." She wouldn't be grateful for his so-called noble sacrifice.
Beathan thought that she would feel regret, that she would feel remorse. How laughable. There was no way she would feel such things.
Emelie strode out of the small house. "We're going to Mercianna." Nothing would throw her off course. She said that she would get married, and that was exactly what she was going to do.
